How to Defrost a Fridge Freezer

If frost is beginning to build up in the freezer, you need to take action. Too much frost doesn’t just mean less space, it also means your fridge freezer will not work as efficiently.

How to Defrost a Fridge Freezer

You need:

  •          * Kitchen towels
  •          * A sponge and cloth
  •          * A cool box
  •          * A bowl of hot water
  •          * Optionally, a wooden or plastic scraper
  •          * Freezer defrosting spray (optional)

If time is not tight, the safest way is to use hot water, a sponge and a cloth. It also requires no scraping, so no chance of damaging your fridge freezer.

Get the towels ready and put them in the bottom of the freezer to catch any water and save mopping afterwards. An oven pan can be used instead.

  •          * Turn off the fridge freezer at the mains.
  •          * Remove the food and drawers.
  •          * If you have frozen food you need to keep, put it in an ice-filled cool box.
  •          * Place a bowl of hot water in the bottom of the freezer and leave the door open. Every time the water stops steaming, replace it.
  •          * When the ice has melted wipe down the interior with your sponge. Then dry it off with kitchen towels.
  •          * Now turn your fridge freezer on and replace the drawers and food.

How long will it take to defrost a fridge freezer?

If the ice is not too thick, it can take as little as two hours for it to melt. In the worst-case scenario, you could be looking at 24 hours with the fridge freezer turned off.

How often should I defrost the fridge freezer?

Aim to defrost the freezer at least once a year – or as soon as the ice builds up to thicker than 6mm. This will help keep it working efficiently.
