Turn the heating down by 1C

Households can typically save £321 a year by turning the heating down by 1C.

Change how you do washing

Running a half empty washing machine means extra loads and bigger bills. Sticking to using your washing machine with full loads could save £17 a year.

Higher temperatures use more energy, so turn down the dial. Washing at 30C will save 40% on energy compared top 40C. Modern washing detergents work very effectively at these lower temperatures.

Tumble dryers run up more costs, so air-dry on a clothes horse to save £116.

Avoid standby, unplug gadgets

This typically saves you £100 a year. Some gadgets are left on all the time, e.g. media servers, Sky boxes, heated towel rails –known as the “phantom load”. If you have a smart meter it is possible to see in real time what the effect is of turning off this phantom load on your bills.

As a starter for ten, turn the lights off when you leave a room to save an estimated £46 a year.

Large appliances

Some large appliances – e.g. fridges and freezers – have to stay on all the time. You can still limit the number of times you open their doors, though: “Every time the fridge door is opened, cold air gets out and warm air gets in, so the appliance has to work harder to get the temperature back down.”
