A freezer is a modern-day essential for the home. We simply couldn’t do without our refrigeration appliances to keep our food cool. As more time is spent at home, it can be beneficial to have extra freezer storage. You save time with fewer supermarket trips, feel more organised as you can have quick meals pre-prepared, and you waste less food by freezing items approaching their use-by date.
Putting a Freezer in a Garage or Outbuilding
Some of us have the luxury of a utility room or large kitchen that can fit several appliances, but space constraints mean that most of us would need to house an additional freezer in the garage or an outbuilding.
We’re relatively lucky in the UK - the temperature doesn’t drop too low, and many freezers can be stored in temperatures down to -10°C. This doesn’t mean the manufacturer’s warranty is going to cover them being kept in a cold building if they fail unless the building has been insulated or is climate controlled. Most manufacturers don’t recommend keeping fridges in the garage, but chest freezers tend to be a little more forgiving of extreme temperatures.
It is possible to get freezers with technology that is designed to work in a lower temperature environment such as a garage or outbuilding. Some of the freezer manufacturers, including Beko, Hotpoint and Fridgemaster, have freezers that are guaranteed to function efficiently in even a -15°C environment.
Wherever you keep your chest freezer, it is important to make sure that you clean it out on a regular basis to avoid food getting freezer burn and to make sure that the appliance is working optimally.
