Spray arms dispense water with the aim of covering your dishes evenly to give a thorough clean.

SPRAY ARM TECHNOLOGY

There are four main types:

TRADITIONAL

This style is most commonly used and has a circular distribution pattern, like a garden sprinkler. Water is pumped into the spray arms, under the lower and top baskets, and it sprays onto the dishes. The water pressure causes the arms to spin, circulating the water.

ADDITIONAL SPRAY ARM

Some dishwashers have a third spray arm on the roof. This is usually in dishwashers that have a dedicated cutlery tray at the top.

SATELLITE

When washing awkwardly shaped dishes, cleaning performance drops if the water jets can’t reach everything. A satellite spray arm solves this – it’s a mini arm located on the end of the bottom spray arm. The double-rotation means that water can reach awkward places more easily.

CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS

Many dishwashers have LED displays and clock timers, with an alarm to signal when cleaning is finished. Touch screen controls are becoming common.

INTERIOR LAYOUT DESIGN

Adjustable racks are useful. They allow you to change the internal layout if you have large items to wash.

FILTERS

Dishwasher collect food that comes off in the wash. Manual filters have to be emptied out by hand; self-cleaning versions take care of themselves.

STEAM CLEANING

Steam dishwashers use steam to loosen dried or burnt on stains. The high temperature kills bacteria, ensuring you have hygienic dishes without harmful or expensive chemicals.

ANTI-FLOOD

This is a really handy safety feature that ensures you don’t come home to a flooded kitchen. It turns off the water supply automatically if it detects pipe has burst and stops water levels rising too high up in the machine.
