How Much Can You Fit In A Dishwasher?  

Getting the right capacity is important as you want to fit as much in as possible to avoid washing up! Running a large dishwasher is much more economical than running a smaller one twice. But to get the most benefit, you need to fill it completely.

BIGGER DISHWASHER, MORE CAPACITY

One of the biggest factors is the size of the appliance. A slimline dishwasher unsurprisingly takes fewer items than a full-size model. If you have a large household, you’ll probably need a full-size dishwasher, which will have a capacity of 12 to 14 place settings, compared to a Slimline’s 9. Compact dishwashers only have a capacity of 4 to 6 place settings.

WHAT ARE PLACE SETTINGS?

The measurement for dishwasher capacity is “place settings”, but what does this mean?

The industry defines a place setting as:

•          a dinner plate,
•          dessert plate,
•          glass,
•          soup bowl,
•          tea cup with saucer,
•          cutlery.

EXTRA FLEXIBILITY

Place settings are a starting point for assessing how much you can fit into your new appliance, but what if you need to put in pots, pans, baking trays and so on? Pots and pans don’t come in uniform sizes, so it’s impossible to guarantee what will fit in. However, there are some features a dishwasher can have you to give you flexibility.

Folding tines are one example. Folding them down lets you fit more in the dishwasher. Models are available with folding tines at the top, bottom or both.

A cutlery tray situated at the top of the dishwasher, instead of the conventional basket at the bottom, lets you arrange awkwardly shaped dishes more easily.

If it is possible, try to see your chosen dishwasher model in a showroom so you can get an idea of how much can be squeezed in.
