Cooker Capacity and Space

As cookers are made in a wide range of sizes, capacity varies from model to model. The last thing you want is to find your cookware won’t fit inside! Ensure you make the right choice by reading our handy hints.

Cooker Capacity and Space

The two factors that mostly affect the capacity of the oven are its size the number of oven or grill cavities.

Oven Capacity

A standard freestanding cooker with a single oven will have a capacity of between 50 and 70 litres. If you pick a model with a double oven, expect 70- 80 litres, split between the cavities. Remember that a double oven offers more overall space but the individual ovens will be smaller than a single oven model. If you are looking at range cookers, the capacity will increase significantly. The biggest models have a capacity of 120 litres or more. Range cookers are typically 90 cm wide – much bigger than the usual 60 cm. It’s recommended to look for a model with over 65 litres for a busy family. Some range cookers have warming ovens or storage drawers that aren’t used for cooking so check the configuration and capacity suit you.

Space On The Hob

The number of cooking zones on the hob depends on the appliance size: wider models have more room. Standard 60 cm cookers tend to have four rings on the hob. The size of the burners varies as some cookers have zones for specific cookware, such as woks. Hob burners have different power levels, so some are more suitable for rapid boiling. Checking the cooker has a big enough hob for your pans. Range cookers vary in the number of zones too. A larger appliance doesn’t necessarily have more zones. Most range cookers have five burners. Larger models may have up to seven burners which should be more than plenty! As with other cookers, the size, power, and purpose of zones vary, so check the hob has everything you need.
