Before you buy a new dishwasher, it is, of course, a good idea to find out exactly what you can put in it! It is not always that obvious what is safe to wash and what is not. You can find out if your new dishwasher is suitable for what you want to wash in our guides.
WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO PUT IN YOUR DISHWASHER
CAST IRON PANS
Cast iron pans give a unique cooking experience and work really well with induction hobs as they are magnetic. However, the magic of cooking with cast iron is linked to seasoning – that baked-on coating of oil that keeps the pan from sticking. Putting a cast iron pan or wok in the dishwasher will damage or even remove the seasoning, causing food to stick to the pan.
CRYSTAL GLASS
We all are aware that glass can be fragile, and that crystal glass needs extra care. Inside a dishwasher, the water is sprayed at high pressure. Putting fragile crystal glass inside a dishwasher is therefore not recommended, as the water pressure can knock the glass over and damage it. In some circumstances, dishwashers can make your glassware cloudy. As crystal glass is intended to sparkle and shine, it is better to hand wash it instead.
ANTIQUES AND HEIRLOOMS
Antiques and heirlooms are precious and often delicate. Putting them in a dishwasher comes with a big risk of damaging them, either from water pressure or high-temperature water. This is especially true of hand-painted or gilded items; the decoration could easily flake off.
ANYTHING WITH ADHESIVES
Heat causes adhesives to lose stickiness. They can also get stuck on other items in the dishwasher or clog up the machine. Remove any sticky labels or other adhesives before putting the item in the dishwasher, or instead wash it by hand.
GOLD- AND SILVER-PLATED CUTLERY AND CROCKERY
Gold and silver are soft metals, so are not suitable for dishwashing. They can get damaged as the detergent will wear away the metal. As these items will to be expensive to replace, it is simply not worth the risk.
