How To Load A Dishwasher

There’s nothing worse than finding dirty pots after the dishwasher has finished. This could be down to wrongly or overloading your machine.

How To Load A Dishwasher

First, you must check your crockery is dishwasher-safe. You can clean most dinnerware in a dishwasher, but some items must only be hand washed. Delicate items can include:

  •          Cast iron
  •          China
  •          Copper pans
  •          Crystal glass
  •          Gold-plated dishware
  •          Non-stick pots and pans
  •          Sharp knives
  •          Wooden utensils

Load The Bottom Of The Dishwasher First

The way you load your dishwasher affects its efficiency. Water must be able to circulate properly, or some items will not get clean.

  •          Load plates and dishes into the slots facing inwards (the dirty side facing the flow of water)
  •          Put pots, pans and casserole dishes downwards.
  •          Roasting tins or baking trays go on the sides and back of the rack.

Load The Cutlery Basket

Ensure forks and spoons don’t nest together.

  •          Put knives blade downwards.
  •          Lay long utensils on the top rack.
  •          Keep stainless steel and silver separate.
  •          Cups and glasses should go in the top of the dishwasher.
  •          Put cups and bowls at an angle so water can drain out.
  •          Place glasses along the side for a more gentle wash.

Load The Top Of The Dishwasher

  •          Cups and glasses should go in the top of the dishwasher.
  •          Put cups and bowls at an angle so water can drain out.
  •          Place glasses along the side for a more gentle wash.

Get The Best Results From A Dishwasher

Scrape off any leftovers: food should be scraped off dinnerware before it goes in the machine.

Avoid overfilling: It’s better to out in fewer items for a more thorough clean

Check the spinning arms can move freely before starting the wash.

Empty the dishwasher from the bottom up: When the wash cycle has finished, empty the bottom rack first so water does not drip down from the top layer.
