Saving Space With Cooking Appliances

The technology used in microwaves has developed immeasurably over the last few years, and some microwaves now offer several different cooking options –including grilling, steaming and convection heating. This makes a microwave a great option for those who don’t cook much. For ovens, there’s also a large variation in size.

If you’re tight on kitchen space, there are a few options available.

Microwaves are flexible, with controls for temperature, time and weight. They are often used alongside a full-sized oven but can still create a full meal.

More sophisticated microwaves incorporate a grill function, and they can now even cook crispy bacon. These models are able to brown food, so are good if you don’t have access to an oven with grill.

Combi microwaves also include a convection oven. Alongside grilling and steaming, they work as conventional microwaves. Although more expensive, you won’t also need to purchase a regular oven. An integrated model will fit into your kitchen units for a seamless finish and can be incorporated at eye level. Freestanding models can be placed on a worktop or inside a suitable ventilated kitchen unit.

Standard single ovens are compact built-in appliances, and often the best option if you are wanting to save kitchen space. Around 45 cm tall, they are similar in size to the largest integrated microwaves. This size works well for a single person or couple, but a larger meal would have to be cooked in several stages. They usually have a grill, which offers more flexibility.

If you want a freestanding cooker, there is not much choice of size. The smallest full-size models are around 90 cm (H) x 50 cm (W) x 60 cm (D), and only the width usually varies. For kitchens with little space, there are tabletop cookers – these have a main oven of around 25–30 litres, and two electric hob rings. Closer in size to a microwave, their sizes start from around 34 cm (H) x 51 cm (W) x 41 cm (D).
