If you are looking for a new cooker, the number of options can be confusing. Should you get a range cooker or a freestanding one? Would dual fuel, electric, or gas suit you best?
Types of Cookers
Here are some of the options to help you decide.
Freestanding Cookers
This combines an oven and a hob into one appliance. You can keep an eye on a dish in the oven while using the hob. Cookers are freestanding, whereas ovens may be integrated into kitchen units. Cookers can still be incorporated into a kitchen surface for a seamless appearance. Freestanding cookers come in 50 cm, 55 cm, and 60 cm widths. Make sure the one you’re looking at fits in the space you have. It’s recommended to have a gap of at least 5 cm round the cooker to protect surrounding units.
Range Cookers
If you have plenty of room and want an appliance that makes a statement, consider a range cooker. These are wider than conventional freestanding cookers, at 90 cm, 100 cm or even 110 cm wide. They often have four cavities, though some have more. The cavities are not all for cooking, you’ll find some doors are for a plate warming drawer or storage. Most range cookers have two ovens, a grill and a warming or storage drawer, with five to eight hob burners. You’ll see range cookers with a mix of hob styles – usually gas and ceramic. Some feature fish burners, which take the space of two conventional burners and can be used with larger pans. Some more traditional models use solid fuels (wood or coal) and can also heat your home and hot water. However, these may need to be on all the time and are more difficult to install. You can get a similar look with a gas or electric range cooker.
Table Top Cookers
Another type of cooker is a table-top model. These are similar in size to a large microwave, at 30-50 cm in width, and sit on your kitchen counter.
