The coronavirus has impacted all of our lives, with people carrying out measures to prevent the spread of the virus. When it comes to washing your clothes, one expert has advised that a certain temperature can kill COVID-19.
How to Kill Coronavirus in your Clothing
Experts at the cleaning company Dr Beckman have advised people how to wash clothes to reduce your risk of spreading COVID-19. The experts say that household linen, towels and underwear should be washed at 60°C to reduce the spread of germs.
A spokeswoman for Dr Beckman said: “There’s a misconception that people should wash on the hottest possible setting if they want to kill bacteria, but that is unnecessary. Our tests have found that washing clothes at 60°C, with a good detergent, is adequate to kill bacteria.
"People often wash at 40 degrees on a quick wash cycle, which we do not recommend. We suggest under the current circumstances that you do regular 60-degree washes, as soon as clothes have been worn."
Dampness helps germs to survive and if there’s water they can multiply. This makes a washing machine the perfect place for a virus to breed. You should, therefore, clean germ hotspots such as your washing machine on a regular basis after it has been used, rather than a once-a-week deep clean. Any cleaning aids, such as cloths or mops, should either be disposed of or thoroughly cleaned after use.
Combined with a sixty-degree wash cycle, this advice should help you to keep your clothes germ free and reduce your risks of inadvertently spreading the coronavirus.
