What Is The Cheapest Way To Cook?

As energy bills show no sign of falling, people are switching to cheaper ways of cooking air fryer sales are up 3000%! But is an air fryer really cheaper than an electric or gas oven?

What is the cheapest way to cook?

Here is a healthy recipe – Asian salmon and vegetables – and how much it costs to cook in an air fryer, a microwave, a slow cooker and an oven.

The recipe

This recipe uses broccoli, peppers and mushrooms, but feel free to use any veg you like. Mix all the wet ingredients in a bowl then coat the salmon and veg with it:

You need…

  •          1 tbsp soy sauce
  •          1 tsp clear honey
  •          1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  •          A little sesame oil
  •          Tenderstem broccoli
  •          A handful of mushrooms
  •          2 salmon fillets
  •          1 pepper, finely cut
  •          1 small piece of ginger, cut into matchsticks

Air fryer

Put the mixture in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 180C for 8-10 mins.

Estimated cost: About 7p including the warm up time.

Microwave

Put the mixture in a microwaveable bowl and cover it. Run the microwave on full power for 5 minutes then check the salmon periodically while cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes.

Estimated cost: About 9p.

Oven

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Wrap the ingredients in a foil parcel and put in the oven for 15 to 20 mins. Let the parcel stand for a few minutes then unwrap.

Estimated cost: About 30p including warm up time.

Slow cooker

Put all the ingredients straight into your slow cooker. Add some water or fish stock to stop the ingredients from drying out. Cover and cook on LOW heat for 2 hours.

Estimated cost: About 10p.

So there you have it: an air fryer really is cheaper – but not by as much as you might think.
