Brits spend over £150 a year on cleaning products
What’s the cost of a clean home? On average, Brits spend £12.61 a month on cleaning products (that’s £150 a year). And that is before COVID-19 hit. Add the pandemic to the mix and nearly 1 in 5 of us are spending more money than ever on cleaning products.
The average Brit spends 6.5 hours a week cleaning their home
Some say that time is more valuable than money, and it certainly takes time to keep a home clean. When they are asked about the amount of time spent cleaning, the average Brit says they clean the kitchen a lot more often than any other room in the home – and it takes longer. That’s an average of four times a week, for 30 minutes. In second place comes the bathroom, which is cleaned three times a week for 25 minutes. Again, the figures rose during lockdown, with 30% of us spending even longer cleaning our homes.
The younger generations have more eco-conscious cleaning habits
Though 1 in 10 Brits only buy eco-friendly cleaning products (going up to 1 in 5 in London), 2 in 5 of us do not consider the environment at all. It appears that the eco-conscious attitude is more prominent in the younger generation, with 75% of the under 35s considering the environment in their cleaning, but fewer than half of the over 55s.
16-34-year-olds the most likely to spend more money on eco-friendly products and are most likely to worry about which washing machine is safest for the environment. Fortunately, many of the best washing machines have eco settings that use less power.
A tidy home makes for a tidy mind
Whether or not you take pleasure in cleaning, a tidy environment is a lot more relaxing than a messy one. Especially now so many homes double up as workspaces.
