Energy efficiency is important. From keeping down bills to reducing our impact the planet, making choices about which appliances we buy can make a real difference. That is why energy-consuming products have an energy label – so you can make an informed decision about the product you buy.
How To Read An Energy Label
Every household appliance features an EU energy label that provides information about the energy efficiency of the product.
A-G Rating
On the left-hand side of the label is a scale with different colours ranging from a deep green for A all the way through to red to denote G. A is most energy efficient; G is the least. To find out what energy rating the domestic appliance you are looking at has, check for a black pointer symbol beside the scale.
QR Code
A QR code is patterned black and white patterned square. You'll see it in the top right corner of the label. When you point your phone's camera at it, it will display a link. When you follow that link, you get in-depth information about the appliances energy rating.
Energy Consumption
Under the scale you will see a number and a measurement next to it. How the appliance’s energy efficiency is rated differs between appliance categories. A TV's measurement is different to a dishwasher's, and so on. Most base the number on 100 cycles of use for that appliance – e.g. how much energy a washing machine will use for 100 washes.
Pictograms
Below the energy consumption rating you will see several symbols. Again, the symbols you see depend on what type of appliance you are buying. For a fridge freezer, you see information about the volume of the fridge and freezer compartments, and how noisy the fridge is.
