What is a Condenser Tumble Dryer?

Are you looking for a tumble dryer? Laundry appliances are not an everyday purchase, and all that jargon can make things complicated. You will see three main types of tumble dryers: vented, heat pump and condenser. What’s the difference?

What is a Condenser Tumble Dryer?

Vented tumble dryers remove moisture through a hose that leads outside. Heat pump tumble dryers separate water from the air circulating inside the drum, then re-pump the warm air to dry your clothes quicker.

Condenser tumble dryers, on the other hand, collect water vapour in a container, so they need emptying. But that means you can put them almost anywhere, which makes them ideal for homes where it's hard to vent a dryer outside.

How does a condenser tumble dryer work?

They remove humidity by using two separate airflows. Air re-circulates within the machine where it is heated, then it is passed through the damp washing where it picks up moisture.

The damp air then passes through the condenser in one direction and the ambient air is passed through the other way. This makes the moisture in the air condense into water, which is pumped to a water tank, or out through the hose.

Sensor drying

Most condenser tumble dryers now feature sensor drying technology. This means instead of a timer, where you choose how long the drying cycle lasts, the know when the clothes have reached the optimal dryness.

What about the extra humidity?

You should fit your condenser dryer in a well-ventilated room which will let some of the warm air escape. The damp air from the dryer can make the room temperature rise and then condense the moisture onto cold surfaces such as walls or windows. If the air is able to circulate around the room, then that should not happen.
