Did you know we throw away 6.7 million tons of food per year? That is terrible for the environment and works out at about £400 per household. There’s often no need to throw away food when you have a freezer. But there are a lot of myths about what you can and can’t freeze.
What Can and Can’t be Frozen
You can freeze almost anything. Here are some things you might not have thought of…
Food near its sell-by date
The best advice is to freeze on the day of purchase but there’s no reason not to freeze things that might end up in the bin otherwise.
Loaves of bread
You can freeze an entire loaf and heat it back up in the oven for a crusty finish!
Pasta dishes
If you’re making pasta to batch freeze, make it slightly undercooked so that when you microwave it the pasta comes out perfectly cooked.
Coffee
Frozen ground coffee keeps its freshness if stored in an airtight freezer bag.
Sauces
Batches of sauce can be portioned up in freezer bags for eating later.
Dough
As long as the dough has risen and is ready to bake, it freezes fine.
Cooked rice
Most assume that this is a no-no but rice is fine to freeze as long as it is done quickly after it’s cooked.
Lemons and limes
These freeze well and if you cut them into wedges first they’re great in a cold drink.
What can’t I freeze?
Never freeze defrosted food that’s been reheated. Also, avoid:
Salad
If you freeze salad it gets soggy when defrosted.
Cooked veg
Veg disintegrates when defrosted if frozen after it has been cooked.
Fizzy drinks
These will explode in the freezer so don’t try!
