How To Keep Chemicals Out Of Your Oven

Planning to give your home a pre-Christmas-clean? Cleaning the oven is a real chore - the time and effort spent scrubbing and the cost of specialist oven cleaning chemicals. Those chemicals have an environmental cost too.

How To Keep Chemicals Out Of Your Oven

How can you ditch those oven cleaning chemicals once and for all?

Switch the chemicals for a cupboard staple

If you are not ready for a new oven, this tip can help. Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) is a natural mineral that also has real cleaning power. It is not toxic or bad for the environment.

  •          * Mix 3 parts baking soda to one-part warm water. This will make a thick paste.
  •          * Then, coat the inside of the oven with the paste (avoid any bare metal spots and the door).
  •          * Leave it overnight.
  •          * Using a plastic scraper, remove the paste.
  •          * Use a damp cloth and warm water to budge any crusted bits.

You will need to use some elbow grease, but this method gets your oven clean without needing nasty chemicals.

Of course, there is a simpler way…

Pick a pyrolytic oven

You can now buy ovens that are really easy to clean. This cuts out the need for oven cleaning almost altogether. There are plenty of different types – enamel linings, catalytic lining and steam cleaning. Our favourite is pyrolytic ovens. These need no scrubbing and no chemicals.

Pyrolytic ovens have a cleaning setting that takes several hours. During the cycle, the oven reaches about 500 degrees. Any grease and grime is completely incinerated.

Now that heat may seem scary, but it’s safe. Pyrolytic ovens contain extra insulation and the door is locked shut during the cycle. So no need to worry about that heat escaping. Once it’s over, you wait for the oven to cool, open it and simply wipe away the ash with a damp cloth.
