How to Make the Most of Space in a Small Kitchen

Houses are shrinking: the average UK new-build measures just 76 sqm –so our kitchens are getting smaller. How do you maximise your space? Sometimes less is more - a small kitchen needn’t compromise the quality of living. The first step to saving space is deciding what is – and is not - needed.

How to Make the Most of Space in a Small Kitchen

It might seem obvious but getting rid of unused appliances is the most effective way to maximise space in a small kitchen. We all buy items we don’t need sometimes. Juicers and egg poachers may seem appealing, but how often do you use them? A stockpot is handy for cooking soup and stews but takes up a lot of space.  Save kitchen storage space for the appliances you are going to use.

If you a collection of appliances that now need discarding, you could donate, sell, or recycle them. If you are having trouble giving up an appliance then move it into a usable space and commit to using it regularly for a month. If you don’t use it, it’s time to get rid.

Storing Appliances Correctly

Once you have decided which appliances you really need, keeping the kitchen organised helps you make the most of your limited space. Although there isn’t a 'correct' way to store your kitchen appliances, there are space-saving tricks you can utilise. For example, when you push items to the back of a cupboard it takes up more space than you think: Stacking them neatly saves space and makes appliances easier to reach when they are needed. Difficult to access appliances are more likely to be neglected!

Appliance storage tips:

  •          Only keep the appliances you regularly use on the countertop. Less frequently used appliances should be stored in cabinets, especially if they are bulky.
  •          Wrap the cords around the appliances after use.
  •          Keep attachments in ziplock bags.
