As well as hygiene, cleaning appliances regularly can keep unpleasant odours at bay, help keep your food tasting fresh, and increase the lifespan of your fridge or freezer.
Avoid a Frosty Reception from your Fridge Freezer
As well as cleaning up spillages and wiping down the handles regularly, it’s recommended to deep clean your refrigeration appliances every three or four months.
What is the best way to clean your Refrigerator?
- Plan ahead: use up as much of the fridge contents as possible. Remove food, putting perishables in a cool bag or box. Check use by dates and dispose of anything past its best.
- Remove the shelves and salad drawer and wash them in hot soapy water.
- Pull the fridge out from the wall and wipe down all the outside surfaces using a soft cloth.
- Vacuum any dust on the condenser coil at the rear of the fridge.
- Wipe down the interior with a mixture of hot water and baking soda. Pop a tea towel on the bottom to catch any water.
- Wipe crumbs off the seals around the door and dry them with a tea towel.
- Reassemble the shelves, close the door and allow the appliance to cool to 5°C before putting any food back.
- When ice on the walls reaches 3cm thick it’s time to defrost your freezer
- Empty out the contents into a cool box.
- Turn off the freezer. Leave the door open so the ice slowly melts. A baking tray on the bottom shelf helps catch the water. Bowls of hot water on of a tea towel can help it to defrost quicker.
- Never use a sharp object to remove the ice. It can damage the appliance.
- Remove and clean drawers in hot soapy water, then clean the interior with mixture of equal parts warm water and white vinegar.
- Dry the freezer with a tea towel, close the door, and turn it back on! Check the temperature has reached -18°C before putting any food back
