A soup explosion is all it takes to turn your sparkling new microwave into a dirty mess. Keeping the workhorse of the kitchen clean and free of germs means regular maintenance – and experts recommend giving your microwave a deep clean every single week.
Cleaning Your Microwave
Using vinegar, citrus fruit and baking soda, our simple method takes just 15 minutes!
Cleaning the interior
Fill a large (microwavable, of course) bowl with about 250ml of water, slice and squeeze the juice out of one or two lemons or limes into it. Microwave it on full power for a couple of minutes until the mixture boils and the door begins to steam up. Leave it to cool down for five minutes then wipe the inside of the appliance down with a sponge. If the turntable has got any residue stuck to it, remove it and wash it – ideally in a dishwasher.
Cleaning the doors
Using a damp sponge dipped in a little baking soda, clean the door - all edges, both sides, and the bit where it seals to the microwave. When this is complete rinse it with a damp cloth and make sure all the residue is removed. If the window is greasy, use a half-and-half white vinegar/water solution, to wipe it down.
Something burning?
The smell of burnt food can return as soon as you use your microwave again. These smells are best dealt with immediately - simply leaving the door ajar can be all that is needed. For stronger odours, place a small bowl of bicarbonate of soda inside the appliance with the door closed and leave it overnight. For the strongest smells, you can use an odour absorbing gel which you leave overnight.
