Buying a vacuum cleaner might seem like fairly a straightforward process, but there is actually quite a lot to consider when investing in this common household appliance: different floor types; your tolerance to dust; and the configuration and filtration system of the cleaner are all factors to think about. Here is our guide to buying a new vacuum cleaner.
Questions to Consider Before Buying a Vacuum Cleaner
Vacuums come in five basic configurations—upright, canister, stick, robotic, and handheld. Each type has pros and cons.
Upright: This is the traditional vacuum style. They can be heavy, but they are best for deep-cleaning carpets. They come with a hose and tool attachments for crevices, upholstery, and other areas.
Canister: These vacuums are bulkier than uprights, but work better on hard floors, stairs, and under furniture. They work well if you have a combination of hard floors and carpets.
Robot: If you want to set-and-forget, robot vacuums are ideal. You can go out, or fo something else while it runs, but they are only really suitable for maintenance cleaning, not deep cleaning as they can struggle with deep carpets.
Stick: For “in-between cleans,” lightweight stick or pole vacuums are great.
Handheld: These mini vacuums are great for quick cleans, or for cleaning the car.
Bagged or bagless?
Do you want a vacuum with or without a bag? Bagless models are great because you don’t need to buy bags, but you have to empty them and perform maintenance on the filters regularly. A bagged model can be better if someone in your family has allergies because you do not need to interact with the dirt.
Does the vacuum have a HEPA filter?
HEPA filters trap microscopic particles: It’s the best filtration system available and ensures your home is as clean as it can be.
Do you have pets?
Pet hair is stubborn. It gets stuck on everything. Many vacuum cleaners have attachments with rubber bristles to remove pet hair.
