Takeaways and social distancing have made many of us turn to the kitchen for entertainment, trying new recipes and baking bread. But making three meals a day means the flow of dishes is endless.
How To Get The Most Out Of Your Dishwasher
Here are some hints for making your dishwasher work for you, not the other way round.
Load correctly
There is a right and wrong way to load a dishwasher. If the water can’t reach an item, it won’t get clean. Make sure there is space around everything, that nothing overlaps or blocks other items and position dishes dirty side down or pointed at the centre.
Glasses go between the tines on the rack, not over them. If your dishwasher has a basket, put forks with tines facing up, knives blade down, and spoons should be alternated, so they don’t nestle together. It is best to scrape dishes before loading, even if you will run a cycle right away.
Clean The Dishwasher
A lot of dirty stuff goes in the dishwasher, and they perform better when they are well-maintained, and regularly cleaned. Clear out bits of food from the bottom or attached to the spray arms, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the filter.
Use the right setting
There’s a reason dishwashers have multiple settings and it’s important to use the right wash cycle for each load. Most dishwashers today have sensors to determine how soiled the dishes are and to manage water use. Heavier loads, such as casserole dishes with baked-on food, need a stronger cycle.
Dishwashers Are Not Just For Dishes
You can wash more than dishes in the dishwasher. Toys, sponges, toothbrushes and scrubbers can all be washed in the dishwasher. You can even run a separate cycle for pet bowls and toys.
But They Don’t Wash Everything
Some things that should never be put in a dishwasher. Wood and cast iron are top of the list. Most crystal and china is dishwasher-safe, but avoid anything with decoration over the glaze, as it can come off.
