How To Deal With Washing Machine Mould

Water, detergent and softeners might get your clothes clean, but all of these can also turn your washing machine into a bacteria breeding ground. If you only use colder water settings, as most of us now do, your washing machine is even more at risk of growing mould.

How To Deal With Washing Machine Mould

It's not just your washer that can start to smell of rotten eggs: If you don't deal with the problem, your washed clothes might also take on a funny smell or – in the worst-case scenario – start to sprout mildew themselves!

Wipe it down

After you're finished washing machine, wipe down any damp part of the washer. This includes the drum, door, rubber gaskets and the detergent dispenser.

Leave the door open

Mould grows in dark, moist areas, so leaving the door open helps to ventilate the washing machine and prevent mould from growing.

Remove wet clothes promptly

When you're doing a load of laundry, make sure you are there to remove the clothes when the programme is finished: don't start the washer before going to bed or work.

Regularly clean the seals

While mould can happen in any washer, it's more common in front-load washers. That's why you should regularly clean the seal around the door.

Use powder detergent

Liquid detergents leave a residue in the washing machine, giving mould a source of food. Don’t use too much detergent and switch to powder detergent.
