Cookers FAQ

Find your most frequently asked questions here about cookers and electric ovens.

Do I need a specific plug for my cooker?

Cookers should be fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Most integrated cookers have plug tops, and are safe to plug into a standard 13A socket. If you're unsure, contact an electrician.

How do self-cleaning ovens work?

There are two types. Pyrolytic ovens use heat to burn off dirt. Catalytic ovens actually absorb grease and fat in a special lining.

What is a range cooker?

A cooker with both a stove and an oven.

What is the difference between a 'built-in' and 'built-under' oven?

Built-in ovens fit into a work surface, often at eye level. Built-under ovens fit under a kitchen worktop.

What are 'conventional', 'fan' and 'multi-function' ovens?

A conventional oven usually heats with a single heat source, whereas fan ovens circulate the heat evenly so cook food faster. Multifunction ovens have a range of cooking options.

What is the difference between a 'double oven' and a 'twin cavity oven'?

Double ovens have two cavities and no grill. Twin cavity ovens have a grill compartment at the top and an oven at the bottom.

What oven capacity do I need?

Oven capacity ranges from 60- 110 litres. A larger oven gives you flexibility and space for larger meals. Smaller ovens are ideal for smaller kitchens.

What type of cooker fuels are there?

There are three main types: gas, electric or dual fuel (gas hob with an electric oven.)
