Doing the laundry is not as simple as grabbing an armful of dirty washing, pouring in some detergent and softener before pressing “Start” – here are some of the common mistakes people make with their laundry.
Laundry Mistakes You May Be Making
1. Not Using The Right Programmes
There are programmes for delicates, wool and sportswear that automatically adjust the spin speed, temperature and cycle length for the best possible wash.
2. Not Zipping Up Zips
Zips should be done up before the garment goes in the wash. They can get caught on other clothing in the washing machine.
3. Not Turning Clothes Inside Out
The rotation of the wash causes friction. This can cause printing to fade and creates pilling on fabrics like wool or cashmere. By turning clothing inside out, the inside wears and not the outside.
4. Using Too Much Detergent
Using too much detergent is one of the most common laundry mistakes. Some detergents come with dosage scoops to help you identify the correct amount. Using too much detergent can leave clothes with a soapy residue that fades colours and attracts dirt.
5. Not Pre-Treating Stains
There are many ways to remove stains from clothes – lemon juice works on sweat marks, toothpaste on grass stains and bread for lipstick are just a few. You must treat stains before the garment goes in the wash, though!
6. Overloading
Overloading makes clothes clump together and move as one big mass. This stops detergent from being rinsed properly and can damage the drum and bearings.
7. Not Checking Clothing Labels
Read the care labels on clothing: they give instructions for washing that make them last longer.
8. Not Protecting Delicates
Silk, cashmere and wool need extra care. They ideally should be hand washed in warm water. If you can’t do this, be sure to select the right washing machine programme.
9. Not Checking Pockets
A check of the pockets can save you washing items again to remove bit of tissue!
10. Not Sorting Your Laundry
Washing whites and colours together risks colours bleeding. Separate darks, lights and whites.
