Vinegar is a non-toxic substance that has thousands of uses around the house. Here are some ways it can work with your washing machine.
How Vinegar Can Help With Laundry
Remove the new clothes smell: It is a good idea to wash new clothes before wearing them. Adding half a cup of white vinegar to the washing machine helps neutralise chemicals left over from manufacturing.
Cut down on lint: Add half a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle to stop lint and pet hair from clinging onto your clothes.
Add a quarter of a cup of vinegar to the final rinse to help to dissolve alkalis from detergents that can make clothes look dull.
Clean the machine: Using the bleach or fabric softener compartments in your machine for vinegar will help to clean them. Washing nothing with just a cup of vinegar will clean the entire machine.
Brighten whites: Add a cup of vinegar to a large pot of water, bring to a boil then drop in white socks, dishcloths or tea towels and leave to soak overnight before washing the next day to make them whiter.
NOTES:
- Distilled white vinegar is best for laundry.
- Always test on an inconspicuous part of the item first
- Never use vinegar on rayon, silk or acetate.
- Try vinegar at your own risk, if you damage your clothes or machine it’s your responsibility to check with your washing machine manufacturer to make sure it won't cause damage.
