Certain stains are stubborn - removing them from clothing can be very tricky. Here are some tips for dealing with some of the most common stains.
Top Tips For Removing Stubborn Stains
Pre-treatment is the key to successful stain removal. Dab away any excess liquid first, don’t run at it or it will make it worse.
Tea And Coffee Stains
Rinse the area with warm water to loosen the stain. This should be done as soon as you can so the stain doesn’t set in. A commercial stain remover should work, but if you don’t have it to hand, raid the cupboards: either white vinegar or a thick layer of baking soda will make help to lift the stain. Wet the area and apply the chosen ingredient to the stain. After soaking for a while, the discolouration should go, but give the garment a clean in the washing machine afterwards.
Red Wine Stains
Believe it or not, the old wives tale is true here: Adding white wine to the area really does work! Use a cloth to soak up as much wine as you can, then add white wine to the stain. It will neutralise the colour. Salt is another solution to the problem. It will draw out the liquid from the fabric. Wash the clothes as normal after this, with a little laundry bleach if necessary.
Mud and Grass Stains
Grass stains and dried mud are amongst the most stubborn stains. For mud, the best thing to do is to wait for it dry, then scrape off the excess and put the item in the washing machine. For grass, soak the clothes and put a dab of detergent on the stain. Wait 15 minutes then wash at a high temperature using biological laundry detergent.
